Rick’s Racing Roundup: J.R. McGinley of Clarion Picks up Win at Mercer Raceway

Rick’s Racing Roundup: J.R. McGinley of Clarion Picks up Win at Mercer Raceway

It felt like summer over the weekend and sprint car racer Carl Bowser took advantage of the warm, sunny weather to turn his dismal season around. (Photo: Carl Bowser had a good weekend picking up his first two wins of 2016, Photo by Rick Rarer) After struggling all spring Bowser rebounded with convincing wins at Lernerville Speedway on Friday and then backed it up by winning the sprint car special at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday. This weekend Lernerville Speedway will present their biggest show of the season as the Firecracker 100 takes center stage Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Headlining the card will be The Craftsman World of Outlaws late model series. Last year, Rick Eckert was the Saturday night winner over a strong field that featured some of the best late models in the country. The 10th annual Firecracker will see complete programs for the late models on Thursday and Friday with the winner taking home six thousand dollars each night. The big 100 lapper will see the winner take home $30,000 on Saturday night! With camping, live music, and a ton of pre-race activities during the weekend, the Firecracker is always a huge event. Photo by Rick Rarer[/caption] After a month off, Mercer Raceway Park reopened their gates and welcomed the ULMS late model series. Russ King bested Titusville racer Max Blair for the $3,000 top prize. Other winners included J.R. McGinley of Clarion, who scored the 358 modified win while New Castle’s Andy Priest picked up the victory in the 305 sprint car feature. Mercer will present a regular seven division show this Saturday with racing getting underway at 5:30 p.m. There will also be fireworks this Saturday presented by Pizza Joes. The Auto Racers for Kids charity program is coming up on July 2 featuring the Patriot Sprint Tour. Look for more info on that next week. After a nasty barrel roll that destroyed his race car a week ago Jim Weller rebounded to win the big-block modified feature Saturday at Sharon Speedway. Weller and team thrashed all week to get another car together and it paid off with a victory. The Penn-Ohio Stock Car Series was also on hand Saturday at Sharon and like always another strong field of stock cars filled the pits. Paul Davis was the big winner, this time, taking home $1,500 for his victory in the Jim Hooks Memorial. Ohio Sprint Speedweek will be at Sharon this Tuesday (June 21) and then regular racing resumes this Saturday with another six division show. Tri-City Raceway Park opened their 2016 circle track season this past Sunday night with The Bill Emig Memorial. Bryce Davis was the winner of the RUSH Late Model feature while Cody Bova was the victor of the 305 sprint car feature. Other winners included Adam Hilton in the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds and William Hurrellbrink was the winner of the stock car feature. Tri-City will continue their “specials only” schedule on July 31 when Tony Stewart’s All-Star Circuit of Champions make their only appearance of the year at the Franklin oval.
